Millend Mill

The PROJECT

Millend Mill is a Grade II listed Woollen cloth Mill dating from the 1550s. The project involved restoration of a derelict ancient building, converting the upper levels to housing and bringing the traditional function of the old Mill back to life by extracting energy from a River.

Derelict Mill pre construction works

11 apartments are built over an open plan hall – a function space and community museum dedicated to the historical workings of Millend Mill.

Conversion works retain the entity and grandeur of the old Mill without compromising its industrial origins through domestic use.

At ground level, the floor is opened to expose the culverts running through the building and an elm waterwheel harnesses energy from the moving water.

The museum features archaeological findings including Mill stones, spindles and gantries as well as information on energy production.

The wheel is 11 ft 9 in by 5 ft 9 in, built on a 110 mm steel shaft with oak spokes, cast iron hubs, and a galvanised steel reinforcement. It has an oak rim and 24 oak paddles, and runs on greased gun metal pillow block bearings, with one shaft end adapted for power generation.
